Influence without Authority:
Getting Results with Colleagues & Clients
We all face Influence challenges in our world of work today, with internal stakeholders, co-workers, clients, customers and vendors, bosses and even direct reports where we do have position authority. The old ways of Command and Control management do not work well in collaborating up, down or sideways in most business settings today.
Come join in the discussion and experiential practice as we explore a Seven-Stage Process for Influencing others, both one-on-one and in group settings. This program will be delivered in a two-month format, with Part 1 here in September covering Stages 1 and 2 of the Influence process around such skills and best practices as:
- Identifying current and future Influence situations in your work life (and perhaps at home as well).
- Building your Wish List of Desired Outcomes for each Influence situation, to guide you in how you choose to handle those situations.
- Assessing your Bargaining Power in those situations, to give you increased confidence to assertively address those situations.
- Crafting a 3-step approach for initially Engaging the Other Person or Group, to get off to a good start toward a productive Influence conversation.
At the end of our Part 1 session, you will have the chance to choose an assignment to practice some of the Influence skills we covered during the next month, so you can reflect during Part 2 on October 26 about your progress and success in using these methods. You will also get a sneak peak of Stages 3-7 of the Influence process that will be covered on October 26.
Facilitator
Steve Garrett is one of the four Co-Chairs of CODPN. He is also the Principal of Garrett Consulting, a Chicago-based Leadership Development Consulting practice. Steve has utilized this Influence without Authority process, and delivered longer training sessions on this topic, in a number of organizations and in many individual coaching engagements over the last 20 years. He will share examples of client organizations and coaching uses of the Influence process during our program.

If you plan to attend the meeting, please reply to codpnetwork@gmail.com by noon on Tuesday, September 25th with your name as it appears on your photo ID.
On the morning of the meeting, security staff in the main lobby will ask to see a photo ID, confirm your registration and provide you with a visitor’s pass.
If you do not RSVP by September 25th your name will not be on the list and you will not be able to join the meeting which is located on the 7th floor.
Program Format
Mix of presentation, large group & small group discussion. Informal atmosphere; please bring your own coffee/tea/snacks (note: there is a convenient Au Bon Pain connected to the building as well as a place to buy coffee and snacks on the 7th floor near our meeting).
